Invalid Baptismal Formulas: A Critical View on a Current Catholic Concern

In 2008 and 2020, the Congregation for Doctrine of Faith published two responses to questions posed regarding validity modified baptismal formulas. When administering baptism, some Catholic ministers had altered prescribed formula with regard naming Trinity declarative introduction (ie ‘We baptise you …’ instead ‘I …’). The dismissed all these formulas as invalidating baptism demanded that individuals baptised be again. explaining its 2020 response referred Thomas Aquinas, who addressed similar issues in his sacramental theology. This reference is evidently due Aquinas’ pioneering thoughts on issue. However, studying work subject it surprising find they reveal a far less literalist approach than suggests. fact, considerations point at an alternative reading, namely should understood acts communication which, based ministers’ intention doing what Church does, aim communicating God's grace receivers understandable way.
